Over the past two days, several AI subscribers have asked me: Will the pause in new ChatGPT Pro 20X subscriptions affect the AI subscription market?
My view is that there will be a short-term impact, but there is no need to read too much into it.
OpenAI is temporarily pausing new subscriptions and upgrades to the $200 Pro plan (20X), starting September 10th. Existing Pro 20X subscribers are not affected, and new subscriptions to the $100 Pro plan remain available.
I regularly speak with AI subscribers, and many no longer use ChatGPT alone.
Many people maintain several monthly subscriptions, including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, AI coding tools, image and video generators, and SaaS services.
A temporary pause in one plan does not eliminate demand for AI tools.
Instead, I think the following trend may become more apparent:
Premium AI plans increasingly emphasize quotas, computing capacity, and usage limits, while users switch plans and products to suit their needs.
If you planned to subscribe to Pro 20X, there is no need to seek a ‘special channel’. New subscriptions are officially paused, so wait for them to resume.
For everyday use, the $100 Pro plan or another plan can serve as an interim option.
If you regularly subscribe to overseas AI services, prepare a reliable payment method. Failed payments may involve the card, billing details, region, or merchant risk controls rather than the product itself. OpenAI also identifies these as points to check when subscription payments fail.
