Virtual Card Payments Failing? Check BIN Compatibility with Your Use Case

Review how card BINs, merchant categories, regions, and recurring payment requirements affect advertising, AI subscriptions, and SaaS payments.

“My card has a sufficient balance. Why does the payment still fail?”

This is a common question among virtual card users, particularly those paying for international advertising, AI subscriptions, SaaS services, and cross-border e-commerce.

A card may work on one platform but not another, stop working after previously successful payments, or complete an initial payment but fail at renewal. Changing cards may not resolve the issue.

It is easy to assume that the provider is unreliable. However, another possible cause is a mismatch between the card BIN and the intended use.

1. Virtual cards are not universally accepted

A Visa or Mastercard logo does not mean that a card will be accepted for every transaction.

Merchant Category Codes (MCCs) identify merchant business types. Issuers may use MCCs and other information to restrict spending. The Stripe documentation referenced in this article describes MCC-based spending controls, and some virtual card products also restrict particular categories.

Cards on the same network can still have different issuer and BIN-related restrictions. This helps explain differences in acceptance.

2. Why choose cards by use case?

Think of virtual cards as payment tools selected for particular purposes. Just as a business may use separate cards for departmental expenses, it can choose virtual cards according to its payment needs.

International advertising

Facebook Ads, Google Ads, TikTok Ads, and similar platforms charge as campaigns spend their budgets, rather than completing just one payment.

Advertisers should check:

  • Support for the advertising platform.
  • Recurring billing support.
  • Compatibility with the relevant region.
  • Support for payment verification.
  • Restrictions on the relevant MCC.
  • Ongoing payment reliability.

A payment may be declined even with sufficient funds, a valid expiry date, and a correct CVV. An advertising payment card should not automatically be treated as equivalent to any general-purpose card.

3. AI subscriptions have different requirements

ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and other AI services commonly use subscription billing. A successful initial payment does not guarantee a successful renewal.

Besides the BIN, relevant factors may include:

  • Issuing region.
  • Billing address.
  • Card type.
  • 3DS or SCA verification.
  • Recurring payment permissions.
  • Platform risk checks.
  • Available balance.

Payment troubleshooting information describes failures involving several factors rather than a single cause. A card used for advertising is not necessarily suitable for AI subscriptions, and the reverse is also true.

4. SaaS and cloud services need ongoing billing support

Businesses use cards for cloud servers, SaaS software, API services, developer services, data tools, enterprise software, and international office tools. These are often ongoing subscriptions.

A first payment may succeed, leading a user to assume that the card is suitable. A failed renewal one month later can then cause an overdue balance or service interruption.

An initial successful payment confirms that transaction, not future renewals. It does not establish long-term compatibility.

5. A low opening fee does not always mean a low total cost

Suppose card A costs $1 to open, card B costs $2, and card C costs $3. Choosing card A solely on price can become expensive if it is unsuitable for the intended use.

You may end up opening a card, encountering a failed payment, switching cards, and paying to test again.

Ask which uses the BIN supports, not only how much the card costs. These questions address different concerns.

6. Five questions to ask before choosing a BIN

1. Which uses are supported?

Ask whether the card is intended for advertising, AI subscriptions, SaaS, cross-border e-commerce, or business purchasing.

2. Is my target platform supported?

A question about “international payments” is too broad. Name the specific platform or purpose, such as Google Ads or an AI subscription, so customer support can respond to your actual needs.

3. Are recurring payments supported?

This is particularly important for ChatGPT, Claude, SaaS, and cloud subscriptions.

4. Are any MCCs restricted?

MCCs identify merchant categories. Cards and issuers may restrict particular categories, even when they use the same card network.

5. Is the target region supported?

Business in the United States, Europe, and Asia may involve different payment rules, billing details, and risk checks. Regional compatibility matters too.

7. Avoid assuming that one BIN works everywhere

If someone claims that a card works on every platform, ask for more detail. Merchant categories, regions, card types, verification methods, and issuer rules may all affect authorization.

Even transactions involving the same merchant may differ if their category classifications differ.

Start with your use case and find a suitable card, rather than trying one BIN for every purpose.

8. Why do business users organize cards by purpose?

As a business grows, virtual cards also support budget management, separation of business activities, reconciliation, team permissions, and subscription management.

For example, a business might use separate cards for advertising accounts, AI tools, SaaS tools, and team purchasing. Each card then has a clear purpose, making problems easier to investigate.

9. A useful order of priorities

Consider your use case, BIN compatibility, payment reliability, and price, in that order, rather than selecting on price and assuming universal acceptance.

For advertising and business subscriptions, payment interruptions are part of the overall cost. A cheap but unsuitable card may disrupt campaigns, subscriptions, or business continuity.

10. Summary: choose a BIN suited to your needs

The relevant question is not simply whether a provider offers virtual cards, but whether it offers a card suited to your intended use.

Advertising, AI subscriptions, SaaS, and cross-border e-commerce have different payment requirements. Do not focus only on the number of BINs, low prices, or fast issuance.

Check compatibility with your use case and region, merchant categories, verification requirements, and ongoing payments. Having more cards is not a substitute for choosing suitable ones.

An unsuitable BIN may lead to a declined transaction regardless of your balance. Start with the payment need before comparing card fees.
